Questions and Answers

This is an archive of relevant mail and our replies organized by subject. The date of the mail bag will be noted for each letter, with a link to the related mail bag. This archive is updated on the first of the month when relevant mail is posted in the current mail bag, and the newest letters are added to the top. Other sections of the Tampa Bay Modeling site link to this section so the mail and our responses can be used as reference and support content. We really like this way of archiving so great letters and our replies are not lost in old mail bags and can be easily researched. Enjoy!

When Does Your Mail Bag Section Launch? - POSTED APRIL 2006.

Hi there. I was reading over your (very, very) cool and hip modeling site and was wondering if you were going to launch your mail bag section in April like it says in your news section. I noticed some things are not up like they were promised in your news section and I am eager to read the model scam section in particular, as I am a model (and not a new one, either) who has been scammed recently and I could have really used the information a few weeks ago. I’m not really complaining (well, maybe a little), but I really like your site and the Tampa Bay modeling community needs all of your really cool announced ideas yesterday. I check the site every day, like many models probably do, looking for your good ideas to materialize into something useful, but ideas do nothing for us if they remain on the drawing board and are not available for us to learn from. Oh, and we need those tools, too. If they work, this site is going to shake up the market! I already know of one model scam who need to be held accountable for what they are doing to models and I really don’t have much information on what to do. Independent Modeling used to have this information but I’m having trouble finding it. What happened to Independent Modeling? I heard that they got in trouble and had to take down all of the cool things. Oh, and good move on giving Monica Stevens a job on your site. She is a bad ass. I love that girl, her knowledge of the modeling profession, and her razor sharp wit. She doesn’t take crap from anyone! I really enjoyed reading her old mail bag on Independent Modeling over the years. Did she get fired from Independent Modeling after they got in trouble and dropped their mail bag section? Those last mail bags of hers were incredibly sassy and very funny to read. I miss them.
Please let your readers know that even us experienced professional models can get scammed if they are cut off from the information and the tools that they need. Those who are responsible for removing what WAS up have done a horrible disservice to models, and that’s why I am really looking forward to your improved “Next Generation” tools and information. We want it, we need it, and it will help models everywhere. Well, once you make it available, that is.
- Jennifer

Hi Jennifer,
Wow. Now that’s the letter that we needed to kick this thing off. As you can tell by now, Tampa Bay Modeling’s Mail Bag section launches now, right on schedule. The other things that you are waiting for, such as the new model scam section and model scam-fighting tools, will be available this month (Check our NEWS SECTION for daily information).
Keeping this short and to-the-point, I’ll now answer some of your other questions (I am still setting up my desk here at my home in Hyde Park and have more letters to get to- I’ll have to keep things as short as possible most of the time).
Independent Modeling was not forced to remove anything, and I didn’t get fired. In 2005, there was an editorial transition and the site was rebuilt from scratch. They no longer saw the need for stating the obvious and some of the content was no longer appropriate for where the site was going. It was formatted as the ultimate modeling resource site, combined with the other independent sites, and focused on career tools and promoting professional models. If you think about it, you’ll understand that it’s kind of hard to use a site to promote anyone when you have entire sections devoted to slamming model scams and generally pissing people off, especially when the controversial content is very redundant and stating the obvious. For the record, I still contribute to Independent Modeling on a freelance basis, and I still hang out with the staff.
Since there was no longer a need for a mail bag on Independent Modeling (I’m not really a fan of what they have now, as it is not as entertaining to read and is instead updated daily as a FAQ-type database that works better for their new format), the models over here at Tampa Bay Modeling wanted one on their site. They were regular readers of mine and liked the mail bags. So, I booked a regular job on their staff as the new editor for their mail bag. Since Tampa Bay Modeling does not directly promote models and it is set up to attack ideas instead of certain people in the industry, it’s not overly stating the obvious and fills an important need. Many of the great things on the old Independent Modeling site have been licensed for use here, and the models are working overtime to improve the information and tools before bringing them online. It’ll be well worth the wait. In regards to the model scam section, they’ve already gone through the first draft and had to start over. It seems that there was too much information being crammed into the sections and it was determined that average readers would get lost in all of the text. They are fine-tuning the organization by using informative summaries that lead to expanded information and tools, and that is much better.
For the record, you can find some of that old information and tools (and my old mail bags) by using search engines like Google (Click on “CACHED” instead of the direct link. Hold down (SHIFT) when you do it to open a new browser window) and useful sites like Archive.org. Take the URL’s found in the search engines (old Independent Modeling content is found under “geomedia.addr.com” and not independentmodeling.com) and paste it into Archive.org. You’ll be able to check out archived versions of any web site on there by year and date. My mail bags ran between 2002 and 2004. Archive.org is really cool for investigative work, as it is the Internet’s best version of a time machine that I know of. I use it to find information that has been removed. Want to see what your favorite web site looked like in 1997? Check it out!
Speaking of old mail bags, some of the best E-Mails from the Independent Modeling bags may find their way here. This month, I didn’t have access to those files (and didn’t have time to look them up on Archive.org, either- It has been busy here and I am still getting organized), so stay tuned.
I’m also glad that you liked my earlier work and think highly of me. I’m back, and you can expect even better things here. I’ve learned a lot since I last did a Mail Bag.

BEWARE OF THESE TOP TAMPA BAY MODEL SCAMS: Tampa Model Search, Tampa Bay model search, Florida model searches, Tampa Bay model placement, Tampa Bay model consultant, Florida modeling consultants, Tampa Bay TFP photographer, Tampa Bay model portfolio photography scams, Tampa Talent Scams and Tampa Bay model job scams. Be aware of what they are, and be careful!

As of February 24, 2007, Tampa Bay Modeling and our industry allies are at war with unethical and unprofessional elements in the Tampa Bay and Florida modeling industry. Our primary targets are Tampa Bay model consultation and agency placement scams, Tampa Bay model searches, Tampa Bay model job scams, Tampa Bay TFP photographers, and Tampa Bay model photography scams. We expect the fight to last years, and we already know that we have been tremendously effective in helping to change the modeling industry so far, as we have the dominate voice in the Tampa Bay modeling industry. Models, your help has arrived, and it is right here.

Regarding Tampa Bay model and talent agencies, we are now convinced that the licensed ones (and all of the ones who are SAG franchised) are on the level and are not doing anything wrong. This said, they have no business managing the career of any professional model, due to the fact that they are working conflicts on interest, as they also represent other models who are in competition for the same jobs that they refer them to. Tampa Bay model and talent agencies also have no business referring aspiring models to any photographers, and we strongly recommend that models find photographers on their own and obtain their modeling portfolios before talking to any modeling agencies. Model and talent agencies should be used only as a source of model jobs and nothing more. By all means, utilize model and talent agencies as one of your many sources of potential jobs, but never let them tell you what to do and always scrutinize their advice. The agency way is no longer the only way, and there are professional alternatives to Tampa Bay model and talent agencies! Also, please note that model and talent agency scams are still around, too.

The Tampa Bay Talent Sites

ADDED MARCH 29, 2007. UPDATED OCTOBER 01, 2007

TAMPA BAY MODELING - TAMPA BAY ACTING - TAMPA BAY FILM

There are now a total of three Tampa Bay Talent web sites. These sites are Tampa Bay Modeling, which you are now on, Tampa Bay Acting, which has launched but had a rough launch and isn't as up to speed as we would like, and, of course, Tampa Bay Film, which has surprised us with its popularity; it is now the fastest growing web site in our group and its size is now equal to our own, with no end in sight. Tampa Bay Film may become much larger than the rest of us by this summer, and this will be an important property. Here at Tampa Bay Modeling we are used to conflict, as we have been fighting a modeling industry war for several years now, and our experience will surely give the Tampa Bay Film staff and their allies a major advantage as they fight for change and professional growth. All of the Tampa Bay Talent sites, of course, are Raptor Class sites which are optimized for scam-fighting operations, so we are set up for fighting.

Where are our sister regional modeling sites? These region-optimized mirror web sites, tentatively known as Miami Beach Modeling, Orlando Modeling, and Florida Modeling (don't bother looking up domain names on these, as some are already taken by others and the titles / domain names have not been finalized yet) are presently on hold until we can add new features to Tampa Bay Modeling and update some of our older content. We have teams of models and modeling industry professionals already assembled to work on these sites after they launch, although we are now finalizing site production protocols so our web master is not overwhelmed with work. For now these sites are on hold. Our regional modeling resource site editors, to assume their responsibilities once these modeling sites go active and launch, are as follows:

Orlando Modeling - Orlando model Patricia Olson is the Editor of the Orlando Modeling site. She is a top fashion runway model from New York with a B.A. in Mass Communications.

Miami Beach Modeling - Miami Beach model Maritza Gonzalez, an old friend of Danielle Cooper's, will be the Editor of the Miami Modeling web site. Maritza is a fashion model from Miami Beach, Florida, and she has worked with many modeling agencies in her career as an employee as well as a model. She is a professional booker and has headed agency divisions, such as the new faces division at a large agency.

Florida Modeling - Tampa model Heidi Duran will helm the Florida Modeling web site. Heidi is a commercial print and fashion runway model with professional experience in New York, Miami, and Europe. She has worked with the top modeling agencies in the world, including Elite and Ford.

As you can see, we have a lot going on here, and we are growing constantly. This spring and summer, we will be adding more features and a ton of modeling career tools and resources. We are even bringing back our Tampa Bay modeling mail bag, with Tampa Bay professional model Monica Stevens, this spring (with an improved, streamlined format so we can keep up with that and our web master can also work on mail bags for Tampa Bay Acting and Tampa Bay Film)! We look forward to the difference that we will make in the Tampa Bay modeling industry, and we're sure that all models are very excited by the potential, the possibilities, and the results of our hard work. These are truly exciting times for Tampa Bay Modeling and the Tampa Bay modeling industry!
