WEB SERIES: Lonelygirl15
PRODUCTION: Mesh Flinders and Miles Beckett
STARRING: Jessica Rose as Bree
FORMAT: Video Blog
GENRE: Drama/ Comedy
CONTENT WARNING: General audiences
TOTAL RUNNING TIME (TRT): Averages 1:00 to 3:00 per episode
TAMPA BAY FILM OPINION:
This began as an Internet hoax that was supposed to be fodder for a television / film pitch and then marked the beginning of a new entertainment medium once the truth was exposed and the creators realized that the series was pulling in large numbers of regular viewers. This series would not be as popular as it is if not for the hoax factor. Although the format is not new (Tampa Bay entertainment and professional polymath C. A. Passinault had a documented outline for such a format for use on public access television back in 1993), the application to the Internet and its advantages is, and may indicate the beginning of a potential revolution in filmmaking concepts and the definition of what a film is and could be. Actress Jessica Rose is absolutely brilliant as the teenage Bree, and we haven't seen a character this likeable ever (although Jessica does remind us an awful lot of web actress / model Kristen Serena and professional actress / model Roxanne Kowalska if they were combined, and she looks and acts almost exactly like Kristen did back in 1998-2000). The story can be a bit confusing, and some of the episodes can be so-so; especially the video mail ones where the characters video blog each other on the same account. The first few episodes are a bit rough, but it begins to hit it's stride after the first ten- the editing is far from what is supposed to be correct, but it works- and in the 18th episode (Episode 0023), the jump cuts toward the end are simply brilliant. The story gets weird as it advances, with more characters and some bizarre cult, but it is definitely entertaining, Jessica Rose is adorable as Bree, the entire series is very watchable with it's tiny episodes, and it is good to the point that it could compete against and stand with traditional films and television. This is proof that the definition of what a film, and what entertainment can be, is generally open to interpretation. A final note about the missing episodes is that the producers chose to omit them and that the loose plot structure is flexible enough to work without them. We are guessing that there were quality issues with them, especially as many of them are from the start of the series where the characters and the story was struggling to find itself. This series is simply inspiring, and we are anxious to see what else will evolve from it with other production efforts. While you would not find anything like this in a current conventional film festival event, our online film festival was perfect to showcase it, and we would much rather watch this than many Tampa produced indy "films", as this has high entertainment value. When it works, it is brilliant, and it is a glimpse of the future of indy filmmaking and showing films; some filmmakers and critics in the Tampa Bay area appear to be confused as to the merits of this series and why we are showing it on our online film festival, but this may indicate that there may be limits to the potential and what the future may hold for the perceived players in the market today.
REVIEWS: Discuss this film series on the MESSAGE BOARD!
SCORE RANKING (1-100): 90
LANGUAGES: English without subtitles, closed caption, or running commentary.
SYNOPSIS: 19 Year old Actress Jessica Rose plays Bree, a 16-17 year old girl with select few friends, a menagerie of stuffed animals, and some interesting life issues in this video blog series that began as an Internet hoax. The plot is loose due to the video blog expositional structure, and what began as a teen drama/ comedy is now a bizarre story of a cult and the twists that come with it.

TOTAL RUNNING TIME (TRT): 01:00
TAMPA BAY FILM OPINION:
Wow. We want to see this film today. The acting and the filmed scenes are some of the best ever for any Tampa Bay film production company. The premise, however, reminds some of us of the Lizzie Mcguire movie where the character has to take the place of a singer who looks exactly like her; Pop is darker, more realistic, and would do the premise justice. Chris Woods power!
